Hardly surprising that in 2002, Richard became the youngest president of The Explorers Club’s hundred-year history.
Richard’s Kilimanjaro climbs have been featured in The NY Times, Travel and Leisure and Men’s Journal, which called the climb one of the 100 greatest adventures. In a cover story in Esquire magazine, Richard was identified as one of “Ten Tough Bastards”. His first ascent on Kilimanjaro was at the age of 11 with father.
Richard’s television journey has been equally thrilling. He hosted a daily live show from England called Earth & Space, specialising in extreme weather, volcanoes, earthquakes, space and oceanography. His series Exploration with Richard Wiese continues to be syndicated around the world and he has just completed filming a special series with the BBC and Discovery called Hell on Earth.
Richard is well known as a great storyteller, MC and key-note speaker and has been honoured to speak at the United Nations, The Royal Geographic Summit, the Bohemian Grove, the Congress of Argentina, the Icelandic Whitehouse, the University of Miami School of Engineering, the World Adventures Travel Summit and Abercrombie and Kent’s Friends of Conservation events. In 2006, he was honoured at the Boy Scout National Jamboree, where he addressed 90,000 people and had a camp named after him.
As a journalist, Richard has received numerous honours, including an Emmy, a Genesis Award, an Associated Press Folio Award and a Golden Halo Award. His articles have appeared in many national publications. His book entitled Born To Explore (Harper Collins) is released in May 2009.
